My father inlaw has an enlarged prostate and he just got his blood work back...He does not have cancer has of right now..But my question is can an enlarged prostate turn in to cancer??? He also has a mass on his back...what could that be..

Does anyone know about Prostate cancer???
It is not cancer and only enlargement. It can be rectified by surgery. The mass on his back may be fat accumulation. This also can be removed by simple surgery. The removed portions can be sent for biopsy to ensure every thing is alright. So do not worry. Now what is Prostate enlargement read -

An enlarged prostate is a non-cancerous condition in which the narrowing of the urethra makes the elimination of urine more difficult. It most often occurs in men over age 50.

Definition

A non-cancerous condition that affects many men past 50 years of age, enlarged prostate makes eliminating urine more difficult by narrowing the urethra, a tube running from the bladder through the prostate gland. It can effectively be treated by surgery and, today, by certain drugs.

Description

The common term for enlarged prostate is BPH, which stands for benign (non-cancerous) prostatic hyperplasia or hypertrophy. Hyperplasia means that the prostate cells are dividing too rapidly, increasing the total number of cells and therefore the size of the organ itself. Hypertrophy simply means enlargement. BPH is often part of the aging process. The actual changes in the prostate may start as early as the 30s but take place very gradually, so that significant enlargement and symptoms usually do not appear until after age 50. Past this age the chances of the prostate enlarging and causing urinary symptoms become progressively greater. More than 40% of men in their 70s have an enlarged prostate. Symptoms generally appear between the ages of 55 and 75. About 10% of all men eventually will require -
Reply:This is just BHP (stands for bening prostate hyperplasia). Most men eventually develop this, due to the fact that the production of DHT (the most powerful androgen) does not taper off significantly with age, causing the prostate to grow continually.

In most cases, this will not become cancerous. But it is very wise to be checked often (as it is for all men over 50). Prostate cancer, when catched early, is very curable.

If this causes important discomfort, he could be put on mild hormone therapy with flutamide, or another antiandrogen (or an inhibitor of 5-alpha-reductase), to decrease prostate size.
Reply:not neccesarily... even if it is, prostate cancer is very treatable and highly surviveable. the mass on the back could be anything without knowing any further info like location, size, pain etc.. he should be getting treatment for the prostate, let his doctor evaluate it
